ANNUAL SURREY WI MEETING 23 March 2015
The meeting at Dorking Halls was very fully attended and this was due in no small part to the list of speakers. On the morning agenda were Kevin Connell of Ember Travel, Catriona Adams, NFWI Trustee and Chair of Science and Leisure and Dame Sarah Goad, DCVO. J.P., HM Lord Lieutenant of Surrey. Dame Sarah gave us lots to think about including women having mental health problems.Beryl Dunham our Chairman had received information from the Chairman of Yorkshire Federation about how to make comfort cushions to help those ladies who have had to have a mastectomy
Our special guest speaker for the afternoon was Michael Portillo giving us a very entertaining talk covering his career to date with a short section about being an MP and a rather longer time talking about his change to being a television presenter and especially about the railway programmes he has been involved with. A great deal of hilarity ensued and his question and answer session gave us a lot of information on his jackets, the Bradshaw's guide and travelling times on the railways. If you haven't seen any of these series there is another one due this summer which covers the USA so do try it out, you'll be surprised how interesting the trains and stations can be, and we can all look out for the two new jackets he will be wearing!
PS Bookham Butterflies President Clare Cody, along with VP Sam Sponer, attended as special guests of Surrey Federation and were warmly welcomed as representaives of Surrey's newest WI. They much enjoyed Michael Portillo's talk and the opportunity to talk to other WI members from across Surrey.

Monthly Summary for January2016
Happy New Year to all our Members. Welcome back to all our exisiting members and a warm welcome to our six New Members who have been waiting to join.
Our January Monthly Meeting was "Killing Sugar" hosted by Be Kassapian from Be in the Kitchen (voted local Business Person of the Year.) We started the evening by trying her little festive muffins ... well we are the WI after all !Be then gave a very lively and passionate talk about cutting out sugar from our diets, pointing out that it was an addicition and that giving up sugar would not be easy to eradicate overnight. We then sampled a green healthly smoothie and a simple instant banana ice cream. A great evening enjoyed by all. Thank you Be and Catherine.
The Walking Group have kept going come rain or shine. The Monthly Walkers were soaked on their first walk of the New Year, while the weekly Walkers have coped with sliding in the mud and heavy rain. One week however has been a beautiful , frosty morning walk with clear blue skis and stunning views.
The two Book Groups are enjoying reading and reviewing "Kiss me First" by Lottie Moggachs and " The Various Haunts of Men" by Susan Hill.
We have Two New Groups starting this month Elploring Gardens & Pilates. We also have a date planned for a taster day of Nordic Walking.
Diary Note. Our next meeting is on the 22nd February. This will be a fun evening of Poetry with John Griffin. Some of you may know him as one of the Quiz Masters at The Anchor Pub and the Grange. He also wrote the Cock and Bukk story in a Roundabout Way in which he played the judge and he gave a sell out performance of Kiplings East and West.
Important ...Our March Meeting will be on TUESDAY 22nd.
Monthly Summary for December 2015

We held our December meeting two weeks early so it did not coincide with the Christmas Holidays. We had a wonderful evening - a local community choir "All Aloud" provided us with some seasonal entertainment and got us into the Christmas spirit with a selection of carols - our vocal cords having been lubricated with mulled wine!
Group News

BBWI members will be going to see The Nutcracker and The Lady in the Van over the festive holidays. A second Book Group was formed.
DIARY NOTE. Januarys meeting will be on Monday 25th when Be Kassapian will be giving ua a talk on "Killing Sugar" , sp those of us who have overindulged can start dieting!!! Important the March meeting will be on TUESDAY 22nd March so not to clash with Easter Monday the following week.
Monthly Summary for February2016
This month our speaker was John Griffin " Having Fun with Poetry". A great evening with an enthusastic speaker who clearly loves what he does ... We all learnt a great deal about how poetry is put together and the very different ways it can be written.
John very kindly sent us a letter of thanks ..which reads.. " I just wanted to say a big Thank you for having me along last night and to voice my appreciation of the very good turn out. One never knows if one has chosen the right material, but judging from the laughter and the smiles amoung my audience, it seems it was well received. I would like to reitterate that I will be very happy to come again to entertain the Butterflies. You have a throughly enthusiastic group of people, a very worthwhile concern, most efficiently organised. It was a priviege to be part of it last night. Thank you again John x
A little poem written for us by John.
